Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Field Associate is normally supervised by the (Senior) Field Officer or Head of Office and performs a variety of functions related to Field activities within the office. The supervisor defines general work objectives and provides necessary advice and guidance. The Field Associate may supervise some General Service support staff.
The incumbent keeps frequent internal contacts with staff members in the same duty station to exchange information, to establish understanding of respective needs; to ensure provision of services and resolution of problems and with the external contacts generally with officials of national and international institutions, leaders of the refugee community, local population and/or Implementing Partners (IPs) on subject matters which may be of importance to the Organization.

The Field Associate will be based at Berbera Field Unit reporting directly to the Head of Sub Office, Hargeisa. The candidate should have a working experience in the field with strong proven protection background and knowledge in relevant aspects of UNHCR's field level operation.
The candidate should have proven experience in emergency management/reception center management, stakeholder management, and coordination with Government and partners. A thorough understanding of UNHCR's protection mandate/principles and humanitarian coordination processes is desirable. Knowledgeable on UNHCR office management is an asset. The incumbent must be a dedicated leader, with good negotiation and advocacy skills, flexible and proactive in managing emergency situations and challenges as they arise.
Training and experience in child protection, gender-based violence, persons with specific needs case management, durable solutions, mixed migration is an added advantage. Additionally, the incumbent should be knowledgeable on voluntary repatriation strategies and SOPs to better serve the returnees and contribute to cross border meetings. Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills are required, along with the ability to deliver quality work under pressure, within a short time frame.
This position requires a respectful candidate who can lead and preserve the credibility of UNHCR in Berbera and beyond. Knowledge of Arabic, Amharic, Oromo and/or Tigrinya will be an asset.
